The People's Assembly's health committee has said Tora Prison Hospital can be ready to accept Hosni Mubarak within one week.

Members of the committee recently visited Tora Prison to make an assessment of its facilities.

The committee said the Ministry of Interior should immediately provide the prison's intensive care unit with a medical ventilator and a blood gas analyser, which are essential for Mubarak's treatment.

Many of Mubarak's former associates and his two sons Alaa and Gamal are currently incarcerated in the prison.

The committee accused former interior minister Mansour El-Essawy of failing to act in accordance with a previous medical report issued on 23 April 2011, which verified that the Tora Prison Hospital was almost ready to receive Mubarak.

After the prosecutor-general ordered that Mubarak be detained pending investigations before his trial, he was moved to the Sharm El-Sheikh International Hospital.

Mubarak's deteriorating health and the lack of adequate facilities at the Tora Prison Hospital were cited as reasons for keeping him at his present location.

The 83-year-old was transferred to the International Medical Centre, a military hospital on the Cairo-Ismailia road, when the trial began.

Many political groups have been calling for Mubarak's incarceration in Tora Prison and accused the authorities of making false excuses to keep him out of jail.

Mubarak is currently on trial for corruption and instigating the killing of peaceful protesters during the January 25 uprising. He was forced to step down on 11 February.

Farid El-Deeb, Mubarak's lawyer, claimed in June that his client was suffering from an advanced stage of cancer but the Ministry of Interior has said it has no proof of the claim.

Dr Akram El-Shaer heads the health committee.
