Minister of Immigration and Expatriate Affairs Nabila Makram has met with Canadian-Egyptian Mena Massoud, the Aladdin star currently visiting Egypt to participate in the third edition of El-Gouna Film Festival (GFF) taking place between 19-27 September.

Makram announced that the Disney actor will act as an ambassador for the recent "Talk Egyptian” (Etkalem Masry) initiative launched by the ministry in an effort to preserve Egyptian identity.

The initiative aims at offering Egyptians residing in foreign countries the opportunity to learn Arabic while also maintaining an Egyptian accent. The goal will be supported through facilitative programmes, set according to age group, offered by the ministry.

Makram, who welcomed the second-generation immigrant to his motherland, expressed her pride in how far he has gone in his career while also embracing his Egyptian origins and his mother tongue. She cited art as one of Egypt's points of strength in its international relations. Massoud's success, she said, can be considered a positive reflection of Egypt and what it can present to the world.

Massoud, who recently gained worldwide fame for his role in the live action film Aladdin, released earlier this summer, was quick to convey his happiness at being in Egypt in addition to being chosen for this ambassadorial role.

The 28-year old stated that he was always keen to not only learn the language of his land of origin, but to also immerse himself in his Egyptian heritage.

Massoud hopes that through this collaboration between the ministry, Nahdet Misr Publishing Group and himself, language and cultural barriers will be removed.

The actor has starred in Amazon Prime's web television series "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan” alongside John Krasinski, who starred in The Quiet Place.

He also stars in the upcoming Hulu original “ eprisal," to premiere on 6 December.
