Egypt’s interior ministry announced on Sunday that Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfiq has decided to grant all prisoners one special prison visit, from 11 November until 10 December, on the occasion of the Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.
The visits will be in addition to the inmates’ scheduled visits.
According to the ministry, giving prisoners the opportunity to celebrate the occasion with their families is part of the ministry’s efforts to uphold human rights and apply a progressive approach to penal policy.
The Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is on the 12th day of Rabi Al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar, which was on 9 November 2019.
Saturday was a paid day off for the private and public sectors to mark the occasion.
Egyptian banks and the stock exchange were closed on 10 November instead, as Saturday is already a weekend day.
