Field Marshal and de-facto president, Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, pledged in an official letter read out in the Shura Council's opening session on Tuesday that the upcoming presidential elections would be exemplary and transparent.
Tantawi also said the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has fulfilled its promise to the people by handing over legislative authorities to the parliament after completion of the elections of the People's Assembly and the Shura Council.
"We encountered tough tests and great challenges, and the state was solely relying on the army; it is Egypt's great army that protected the revolution and adopted all its demands," Tantawi added.
"We are now on the verge of building a modern country through choosing the constituent assembly that will draw up the new constitution and eventually hold the presidential elections.”
No set date has been determined for the presidential elections but SCAF said it would step down before the end of June.
