Egypt will allocate an additional EGP 2 billion (approximately $126 million) in the current fiscal year’s budget for road development in several govenorates, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly said.

Part of the funds will be directed towards roads connecting cities within the same govenorate, with some projects having already been launched, the cabinet quoted Madbouly as saying in a statement.

The move is based on the directives of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi’s to draw up a plan to upgrade roads in govenorates, starting from the current fiscal year that began last July and extending for two more years.

Some EGP 4.17 billion (approximately $263 million) was earmarked for the development of around 2,000 roads across the country in the current fiscal year, before the approval of the additional funds, according to local development minister Mahmoud Shaarawi.
