The Egyptian presidency has mourned with "great sorrow" the death of ousted former President Hosni Mubarak, who died on Tuesday at 91.

The presidency said in a statement that it mourned Mubarak for "what he offered to the country as one of the leaders and heroes of the glorious [1973] war" with Israel.

It referred to his role as "chief of the air forces during a war that restored dignity and pride to the Arab region." The presidency also offered condolences to his family.

Mubarak's son Alaa confirmed the news on Twitter.

The Egyptian military also mourned the death of the former leader as "one of its sons and one of the leaders of the glorious…war" and offered condolences to his family and to the armed forces.
