Egypt has signed a deal with France to restore a150-year-old mini-suspension bridge inside Cairo’s Giza Zoo, the agriculture ministry said.
Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the French architect who designed the world-famous Eiffel Tower, the bridge connects two small artificial hills.
France will work with Egypt to restore the bridge, as it possesses construction blueprints, agriculture ministry spokesman Mohamed El-Karsh told Ahram Online on Sunday.
It was designed between 1875-1879, over a decade before the construction of the French tower.
The bridge, which has been closed since the 1990s, is scheduled to be reopened to the public once the renovation work is completed, allowing visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the garden, the ministry said in a statement on Saturday.
It did not specify a timeline.
The ministry described the Eiffel Bridge as one of the most important historical constructions at the zoo.
Established in 1891, the 80-acre zoo houses 4,800 animals and birds including several rare species.
