Egypt records 189 new coronavirus cases on Monday, bringing total to 3,333

Egypt reported its highest daily increase in coronavirus cases yet on Monday with 189 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3,333, the health ministry said.

The death toll now stands at 250, with 11 new fatalities recorded on Monday, the ministry added.

On Friday, Egypt registered 171 coronavirus infections. 

Eighty-nine Egyptians have recovered and were discharged from quarantine hospitals, according to the ministry’s daily bulletin, which brings the total number of recoveries so far to 821.

The number of patients who have retested negative, including the recoveries, has now reached 1,086, ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

The newly detected cases include one foreigner. They were detected through the ministry’s investigation and contact tracing protocols, Megahed added.

Egypt has adopted a set of strict measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus, including suspending schools and universities, closing all houses of worship, in addition to halting air traffic.

A nationwide curfew is also in effect daily from 8pm to 6am.
