Egypt’s Ministry of Religious Endowments announced on Wednesday that the closure of mosques and the suspension of mass prayers will continue during the last 10 nights of Ramadan nationwide.

According to the statement issued by the ministry, Itikaf prayers – where one secludes oneself in a mosque for prayer – will not be allowed. Many devoted Muslims practice the ritual during the last 10 nights of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Since mid-March, Egypt has closed down mosques and churches nationwide to curb the outbreak of coronavirus.

The only activity currently allowed in mosques is the broadcasting of the call to prayer.

Egypt has so far recorded 10,093 cases of coronavirus.
