The rate of coronavirus infections in Egypt is expected to continue declining during the coming days, an official at the country's health ministry has said, expecting to record zero cases by mid-September just in case people remain adherent to the preventative measures.

"We don't say we have defeated the virus but we have controlled it," head of the health ministry's scientific committee to combat coronavirus, Hossam Hosny, said in TV comments late on Wednesday.

Egypt has been seeing a remarkable drop in recorded coronavirus cases, registering daily cases lower than 1,000 over the past two weeks.

He warned that many countries have lost control over the contagion once again despite the situation having started to stabilise, adding: "that happened due to non-compliance with precautions".

The official said Egypt's recovery rate demonstrates the efficiency of the treatment protocol adopted by the country.

Egypt's coronavirus recoveries hit 30,075 after 602 cases recuperated on Wednesday.

According to Hosny, Egypt has four different treatment protocols for coronavirus patients based on the infection severity, patients' ages, and whether they suffer from chronic diseases.

Egypt has used a variety of immune-boosting drugs to treat Covid-19 cases, he pointed out.

As of Wednesday, Egypt has recorded a total of 89,745 coronavirus cases, including 4,440 fatalities since the outbreak began in February.

Despite the reopening of the country late last month, the daily figure has stabilised with the country's record of daily coronavirus cases — 1,774 infections recorded 19 June — kept unbroken to date.
