Egypt reported 157 new coronavirus infections on Monday, the health ministry said, the lowest figure since 14 April.

The new cases bring the total infection tally to 94,640 since the outbreak began in mid-February.

The country registered 23 new deaths on Monday, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 4,888, the ministry said.

Egypt's daily tally of new coronavirus infections and daily death toll both have continued to decline in recent weeks despite the recent lifting of lockdown measures in the country.

Monday's statement said 1,611 patients have been discharged from hospitals after recovering from the virus, taking the total number of recoveries to 44,066.

Egypt resumed regular international flights and reopened tourist resorts to foreigners on July 1 after restrictions to curb the pandemic brought the vital tourism industry to a near standstill.

The country has also allowed more businesses to reopen, including restaurants, coffee shops and gyms, in a bid to keep the economy running.
