Egypt’s prosecutor-general on Tuesday ordered Ahmed Bassam Zaki be referred to criminal court on charges of sexual assault of minors, blackmail and sexual harassment.

Zaki, who is in his early twenties and a graduate of the American University of Cairo, was arrested in July after the prosecution received an official complaint from a woman with the help of the National Council for Women accusing him of blackmailing her in November 2016 in an attempt to force her to have sex with him.

According to the prosecution’s statement on Tuesday, Zaki is accused of sexual assaulting three girls under the age of 18 years old and threatening them, along with another girl, to divulge matters that will harm their honour, while demanding they continue having sex with him.

The statement added that Zaki is accused of sexual harassing two of the victims and of taking photos of one of the victims while kissing her, without her consent in a private location.

He is also accused of using telecommunication devices and social media networks in committing crimes, and of possessing cannabis with the intention of consuming it.

The statement added that a forensic report had determined the defendant had tested positive for cannabis consumption.

The prosecution said that it built the case upon the testimonies of the victims and a number of witnesses as well as police investigations. Evidence gathered included a number of SMS and screenshots of conversations between victims and the defendant.

Dozens of women anonymously accused Zaki of committing a multitude of sexual crimes in an online campaign earlier this summer. Some of the victims posted messages and calls with him that purportedly supported their claims.
