Egypt’s emigration ministry said on Sunday that a viral online video showing an Egyptian shopkeeper in Kuwait being assaulted at a toy shop by two Kuwaitis is “incomplete,” and does not show the details of the whole incident.

The ministry said in a short statement that the incident was over a dispute concerning “some products at the toy shop,” adding that the two Kuwaitis have been arrested and are currently detained pending investigations. It added that the two men have apologised to the Egyptian shopkeeper.

The ministry said that as per the Egyptian citizen’s own request, his personal information would not be revealed.

The statement was issued one day after a video clip went viral late on Saturday showing two Kuwaiti young men physically assaulting the Egyptian shopkeeper. The reason for the attack is unclear.

The video clip surfaced on Kuwaiti Twitter accounts, which provided no details other than stating that the incident took place in a toy shop in the Fahaheel area.

The Arabic hashtags ‘#The_Egyptian_rights_in_Kuwait’ and ‘#Kuwait’ have been top trending in Egypt with over 20,000 tweets, mostly demanding justice for the Egyptian worker.

The past few months have seen a number of similar assaults in Kuwait against Egyptian expats.

According to Kuwaiti reports, there are nearly 671,000 Egyptians living and working in the Gulf country, making them the second largest foreign community in Kuwait after the Indian community.
