Presidential hopeful and former head of intelligence, Omar Suleiman, met with the interim Coptic pope, Bishop Bakhomious on Saturday.

The meeting, which took place only hours before Bakhomious's Easter press conference, allowed limited media coverage: only photographers where allowed in the meeting room, but no reporters.

Bakhomious is expected to give a speech at a press conference later the same day in celebration of Easter, the first in decades that won't be presided over by the late Pope Shenouda III .

Suleiman's presidential bid has been highly criticised by revolutionary groups and parties for his role in the regime of the ousted president Hosni Mubarak. Suleiman also accepted the position of vice president during the 18-day Tahrir uprising, where many anti-Mubarak demonstrators were killed, but eventually led to Mubarak's ouster.

The former intelligence chief only last week joined the country's first presidential race since since the fall of Mubarak's 30-year regime. Suleiman hinted in one of his press statements that he only decided to run to stand up to the Islamists, who have dominated the political scene after the revolution.
