An Egyptian prosecutor has ordered the 15-day detention of Safwan Sabet, the chairman of the country’s biggest dairy and juice producer Juhayna Food Industries, for joining a terrorist group.
Sabet was detained on Wednesday pending investigations, the company announced in a statement to the stock exchange last week, without providing details about the inquiry.
A judicial committee formed by the justice ministry had seized Sabet’s funds in 2015 on allegations that he had ties to the banned Muslim Brotherhood group. It is not yet clear if the new charges are related.
Juhayna said last week that Sabet’s arrest will not impact the company or its daily operations, and that it will continue to carry out its activities and supply its products to consumers.
Juhanya added that its deputy chairman, Seif El-Din Sabet, has been appointed acting chairman.
Established in 1983, Juhayna Food Industries is a leading Egypt-based manufacturer specialised in the production, processing, and packaging of dairy, juice, and cooking products.
