Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi announced on Wednesday the opening of the 27th International Handball Federation’s (IHF) Men’s World Championship, Egypt 2021, at the Cairo International Stadium.

In an opening speech, he welcomed the participants, saying the world has become able to co-exist with the circumstances imposed by the pandemic.

“Allow me to welcome you all, honourable guests, to the land of Egypt, in the largest sports gathering the world is witnessing currently,” El-Sisi said in the opening speech.

He affirmed that holding such an event is a “message through which I assure that the world has become able to co-exist in light of the new situation imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.”

El-Sisi added that “we will get through this ordeal, God willing, more coherent and integrated in the face of various challenges and with further understanding of the value of life and peaceful and secure co-existence among peoples.”

Egypt is hosting the Championship from 13 to 31 January 2021 with 32 teams participating for the first time in the tournament's history.

The Egyptian handball team is facing its Chilean counterpart in the opening match of the championship tonight.
