Egypt's first independent English-language daily newspaper Daily News Egypt has decided to call it quits after seven years
Egypt's first independent English language daily newspaper Daily News Egypt decided on Thursday that it will cease publication after seven years of reporting.
The decision was made by Egypt Media Services, the managing company of the paper, citing financial reasons.
On Sunday, the editorial team published its final message, 'Daily News Egypt: Final Words'.
"After seven years of providing hard breaking news and analysis on Egypt, and being the only independent English-language printed daily in the country, we regret to inform our loyal readers that, as far as the current editorial staff was informed, the paper will no longer be published," the team announced.
The paper, which published a printed edition and a website, is affiliated with the International Herald Tribune and first functioned as the Daily Star Egypt before changing to its current name in 2007.
It has focused on publishing business, news, politics, and culture, in addition to video journalism and a cartoon section.
The editorial team has announced that it wishes to keep the webiste alive. The team has requested that management grant them their wish "even if it means that we, the current editors and reporters, have to finance it ourselves," they said.
