Egypt's ruling military council held a press conference early Thursday afternoon in Cairo to discuss Wednesday's violent clashes outside defence ministry headquarters between sit-in protesters and unknown assailants, which left over seven dead and dozens injured.

At the conference, council member General Mahmoud El-Assar also vowed that this month's presidential elections would be held on schedule and in full transparency, stressing the independence of the 13 contenders. "We stand an equal distance from all candidates," said El-Assar, adding that more that 40 international NGOs had been invited to monitor the polls slated for 23 and 24 May.
