The Revolution Youth Coalition, in a statement issued Thursday, has denied reports that some of its members met with presidential hopeful Ahmed Shafiq.

The coalition said that the reports aim at distorting the image of the revolutionaries.

"They will use these tactics in the coming period in a deliberate smear campaign against the coalition and other public figures," the statement said.

The coalition, which has been at loggerheads with Shafiq since he announced his intention to run for Egypt's top post in 2011, said that the dispute between them and Shafiq is not just a political dispute but one drenched in the blood of martyrs of the Battle of the Camel, when he was prime minister.

Shafiq became premier in the last days of Mubarak's rule in an attempt to quell protests that had erupted across the country. On 2 February, thugs riding on camels entered the square and attacked protesters, leaving 11 dead. Many protesters have since blamed Shafiq for the incident and see him as the epitome of the old Mubarak regime.

Shafiq entered the elections with 13 other candidates and won enough votes to enter the second and final round 16-17 June. He will face the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi.
