Tantawy calls on parliament to discuss constituent assembly

After a meeting between political parties and SCAF, an agreement is reached regarding membership of constituent assembly

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawy, the head of SCAF, has called on parliament to meet next Tuesday, 12 June 2012, to choose members of the constituent assembly. The decision comes after a convened by SCAF with 22 political parties represented in parliament (including the Freedom and Justice Party, which that boycotted the meeting) and independent MPs to discuss representation in the constituent assembly.

Two days ago, SCAF gave political parties and powers 48 hours to reach an agreement on membership of constituent; otherwise it would put the 1971 constitution back in place, or issue a constitutional declaration specifiying the criteria for membership of the constituent assembly.
