The Alexandria Criminal Court has sentenced four police officers to life imprisonment for the murder of Sayed Bilal, a Salafist, in January 2011.
The murder took place when Bilal was arrested on 4 January 2011 during investigations by the State Security Investigations Service (SSIS) into the New Year’s Eve bombing of the Two Saints Church in Alexandria.
Bilal, a 31-year-old Salafist from Alexandria, was tortured to death while being interrogated.
The four officers, Hossam El-Shenawy, Osama El-Kenisy, Ahmed Mustafa Kamel and Mahmoud Abel-Aleem Mahmoud, were convicted in absentia because their whereabouts is unknown. A fifth suspect, officer Abdel Rahman El-Sheimy, was sentenced to 15 years.
