Ahmed Shafiq, who came second in Egypt's presidential election runoff, has released a statement offering his condolences on the death of his former colleague Omar Suleiman.
Shafiq described Suleiman, who served as intelligence chief and vice president during the Mubarak era, as a patriot who had served the country for many years.
Suleiman died on Thursday aged 76 whilst undergoing medical tests in the United States.
Field Marshal Tantawi is closely following the return of Suleiman's body to Cairo from the US.
Suleiman's military funeral will take place Friday in Cairo and will be attended by Field Marshall Tantawi, the head of the quasi-ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, according to an unnamed intelligence source.
