Diaspora Copts not responsible for anti-Islam film

American-Israeli filmmaker Sam Bacile goes into hiding after his anti-Islam film, 'Innocence of Muslims', stirs anger among Muslims in Egypt and Libya

An American-Israeli filmmaker went into hiding Tuesday after his film attacking Islam's Prophet Muhammad sparked angry assaults by ultra-conservative Muslims on US diplomatic missions in Egypt and Libya, where the US ambassador and three embassy staff were reportedly killed.

The film was initially believed to be produced by members of the Coptic Diaspora. Maurice Sadek, a conservative Coptic Christian living in the US, and controversial Pastor Terry Jones, who is known for his burning of the Quran, are believed to have been promoting the film but were not involved in its production, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal.

Speaking by phone from an undisclosed location, writer and director Sam Bacile remained defiant, saying Islam is a cancer and that he intended his film to be a provocative political statement condemning the religion.

Protesters angered over Bacile's film opened fire on and burned down the US consulate in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing the US ambassador to Libya and three embassy staff on Tuesday. In Egypt, protesters scaled the walls of the US embassy in Cairo and replaced an American flag with an Islamic banner.

Bacile, a 56-year-old California real estate developer who identifies himself as an Israeli Jew, said he believes the film will help his native land by exposing Islam's flaws to the world.

"Islam is a cancer, period," he repeatedly said in a solemn, accented tone.

The two-hour film, "Innocence of Muslims," cost $5 million to make and was financed with the help of more than 100 Jewish donors, said Bacile, who wrote and directed it.

The film claims Muhammad was a fraud. An English-language 13-minute trailer on YouTube shows an amateur cast performing a wooden dialogue of insults disguised as revelations about Muhammad, whose obedient followers are presented as a cadre of goons.

It depicts Muhammad as a feckless philanderer who approved of child sexual abuse, among other overtly insulting claims that have caused outrage.

Muslims find it offensive to depict Muhammad in any manner, let alone insult the prophet. A Danish newspaper's 2005 publication of 12 caricatures of the prophet triggered riots in many Muslim countries.

Though Bacile was apologetic about the American who was killed as a result of the outrage over his film, he blamed lax embassy security and the perpetrators of the violence.

"I feel the security system (at the embassies) is no good," said Bacile. "America should do something to change it."

The film was dubbed into Egyptian Arabic by someone Bacile doesn't know, but he speaks enough Arabic to confirm that the translation is accurate. It was made in three months in the summer of 2011, with 59 actors and about 45 people behind the camera.

The full film has been shown once, to a mostly empty theatre in Hollywood earlier this year, said Bacile.

Let us all stop and think!!
Does anyone really really think that it is possible to reach an insult free time, in our modern "media connected" world, where there will be no insult towards our prophet or their prophet. This is an almost 7 billion people world in a digital era with video cameras and internet available to everyone. This is meaningless and the only way forward is to calm down and ignore irrelevant events. Rather the Muslims should do the hard work of producing their own documentaries and movies that are critical of themselves that show confidence in their faith and believes. Let us all promise to grow up and walk away when some body is being rude. Killing of an innocent ambassador who actually helped Libyans get rid of their worst nightmare vs. a. vis. Gaddafy is against any thing Islam or any other religion stands for.

Something isn't adding up about this....
Google search "Sam Bacile" and there is no record of a real estate developer in CA or the US by this name. If you look at the clip of this "movie" on youtube, you can see that there is NO WAY $5 million dollars was spent on its production. It looks more like a student high school production with a budget of $5,000. No one knows any of these mysterious 100 Jewish donors. So, my question is, who is this guy, really. Is "Sam Bacile" his real name? Who really funded this movie and why? Who is trying to stir up Islamic anger towards the US? Are the same people who made this "film" also trying to create instability and a wedge in newly created Arab nations? Who decided that 911 was a good day to storm US embassies and consulate? Was this film really created by agent provocateurs? Who really benefits from inciting violence? Who is trying to take advantage of this right now? Who is popping up in the news trying to use this as a wedge or take advantage of these eve

To wondering outloud
I agree with all your questions, you can't find any information on Google. The identity of "Sam Bacil" was revealed by Wall Street Journal, the money was for Jewish charity according to them.

how to promote a bad film
in america, we expect that people are mature enough to ignore extreme points of view expressed through the arts. to riot and to kill over a film, especially one that almost no one had seen until now, is not civilized. anyone can put anything up on the internet, and now the only people who have seen this film are the people who seek it out so they can watch it in order to get angry about it. the god that i believe in does not watch movies, does not promote violence, and does not need any human's help to defend his eternal glory. but down here on earth, people who make insulting movies are usually ignored and then they go away. now with all this rioting, everyone will know about this dumb movie.

The jews are always losers of their trials to halt Islam from being distributed across the world.
I hope people of the world know about Islam more because of this film, since that jew wants to abuse our Phrophet (peace of God be upon Him) through this disgusting film, but Iam sure that they will not live the life they want. InshaAllah God's punishment will come to any one who participated in that film and InshaAllah all the world knows about the jews' plans to make fights between the Muslims and the Christians. Islam is the only religion which could never be changed by the jews , they (the jews) have changed all the religious books from Allah( The only God), as well as they changed Bible and they were successful in all this but We as the Muslims know that no one can change Quran ( The Islamic book from Allah ) since Allah (the only God) will protect it Himself from their hands. and I really want to add that from the past trials no one could be successful to halt Islam from being distributed across the world and later we see the results of the film owners and actors

stop dreaming: Jews have their own religion and don't think much about Islam
You generalize about Jews and so are wrong. Jews have their own religion, which predates Islam by about 2000. There is nothing in Islam as a religion (as opposed to Islam as a culture, which includes music, architecture, poetry and other external branches) that is not in Judaism so those Jews who care about religion are content with their own stuff and don't think much about other religions. The conflict between Jews and Palestinians is about land, not about religion.

The Coptic View
As a Copt, I say this movie is a disgusting disgrace. The story of the history of the great religions is one to be had by academics not a bunch of morons who only want to insult people and incite them to violence. It is troubling that our Muslim brother should resort to violence and I condemn that more so. But this film is very very inflammatory. I hope the producers and all involved are prosecuted for inciting violence

An EGYPTIAN Coptic Christian made this piece of sh*t film, not a Jewish Israeli!

prosecute criminals
the only people who can be prosecuted in a free world are the criminals. and the criminals in this case are those who commit murder and attacks. all of you have adult brains, you dont need to believe any movie, if you know it is a lie, just ignore it. you dont need to kill anyone.

Really??
I must disagree with you Michael. The violence and murder that followed proves the very point the film was trying to make. Perhaps it is the truth that hurts so much!

Insulting the Prophet is the ultimate red line.
Bacile the Jewish hater of Islam desserves to be underground soon. He can't insult the Prophet of Islam and remains alive. This is a very very very very serious manner.

Search the books before condemning!
Before joining this mad frenzy, look at the film and read the Qur'an and Hadiths. Every seen in the clip has a basis in those books. Just step back, be objective, and think!

Death threat?
So this is a very clear death threat to Bacile or what? Thanks for your clear message... Are you the master over death and life? This is what is a very very very serious manner in a civilized world: to threat somebody else like this.
