In a special report published by Egyptian state daily Al-Ahram on Saturday, Ihsan Kamil Gorgy, head of Egypt's Forensic Medical Authority, stated that ousted President Hosni Mubarak – currently facing a life sentence in Tora Prison – was in good health, reporting that he had not experienced any comas as had been reported previously.

Gorgy stated that extensive medical checkups carried out by a special medical team following Mubarak's sentencing in June had revealed no serious health problems.

Almost three weeks after the announcement of Mubarak's life sentence on 2 June, he was transferred to a military hospital following news that his heart had stopped beating and he had fallen into a coma.

Since his sentencing, several reports have emerged in the media – some of which have been challenged by observers – about Mubarak's deteriorating health condition. Critics, meanwhile, have condemned the media hype, asserting that it was being used as a tool to generate public sympathy for the ousted president.

According to Gorgy, Mubarak underwent a two-week medical check-up at Tora Prison, along with another one carried out during his stay at a military hospital in Cairo's Maadi district. 

Moreover, Gorgy said there was currently no pressing need to transfer the former president – the first Arab head of state to be slapped with a jail sentence – to any medical institution outside of Torah, since his situation was relatively stable.

The latest statements about Mubarak's health refute earlier reports by his private doctor, who had earlier stated that the former president had suffered a number of strokes and lung artery blockages, as was corroborated by the state media, in the wake of his sentencing.
