A statement dubbed the “25 January revolution Communique #1”, released yesterday, announced that Egypt’s revolution has not ended and will not do so until all demands are met.
While stating that the Egyptian people now have full control over their land, fate and future, it adds that the revolution will continue until all the protesters’ demands are met. The demands listed include lifting the emergency law, releasing all political prisoners, a new constitution and the dissolving of parliament.
The statement also asked for the establishment of a transitional presidential council of five members, one from the military and the rest civilian. None of these figures, the statement adds, will be allowed to run for the country’s first presidential elections this September.
They also asked for the formation of a transitional government that will help run the country and pave the way for free and fair elections, but again none of its members will be allowed to run in the presidential or parliamentary elections.
An assembly should also be set up to draft a new constitution for the country, encompassing democratic values and human rights. This constitution will then be put to the public in a referendum to ratify it three months after the assembly is formed.
The statement also calls for the freedom to form political parties without restriction. Freedom of expression and the right to form civil society groups are stipulated conditions that need to be met.
The statement also asked for the abolition of all military courts and the abolition of all sentences handed down to civilians by these courts.
The group conclude their statement by asking the Egyptian army to fully support the demands of the protesters and to stay on side of the people.
