Kasr El Nile Misdemeanors Court in Cairo sentenced on Thursday El-Sayed El-Badawi, the head of the Wafd liberal party and CEO of Sigma media company, to three years jail and set bail at 10,000LE for writing a check to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) that bounced.
Al-Badawi, a business tycoon, has been on Al-Wafd's Higher Committee since 1989. He was Al-Wafd’s Secretary General before his election to the party’s leadership in 2010.
Wafd Party is one of Egypt’s oldest liberal parties. Following the ouster of former president Hosni Mubarak, Wafd has emerged as an influential player in the political arena. The party commands the largest network that any political party in Egypt possesses today, covering major cities in twenty-four out of twenty-six Egyptian governorates.
