Coptic Christians protesting a government moratorium on construction being carried out on a Church in the Cairo district of Omraneya, clashed with anti-riot police yesterday leading to two deaths and dozens of injuries. Demonstrators, who raised banners proclaiming "We have a right to pray", were fired at with tear gas and rubber bulltets. 156 people -- of whom 133 are detained and 33 hospitalised -- are currently facing investigation, charged with the use of knives as weapons, the attempted murder of police officers, and the intentional sabotage of public facilities.
