Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayipp Erdogan said Saturday that Egypt and Turkey are capable of jointly bringing stability to the Middle East. He made his comments during a speech at Cairo University after holding talks with President Mohamed Morsi on the situation in Gaza where at least 39 Palestinians have been killed in an ongoing Israeli onslaught on the coastal strip.

Erdogan praised Morsi's decision to recall Egypt's ambassador to Israel, adding that Turkey will continue to cooperate with Egypt on Gaza. The Turkish premier affirmed that his country will work with Egypt and the international community to support the Palestinian people.

He added that Turkey and post-revolution Egypt can guide the region without the need for outside "brokers."

Erdogan said that the international community had failed to achieve justice, adding that the UN Security Council should be reformed so that its decisions are not determined by the five permanent members only.

Erdogan also reiterated his criticism of the Syrian regime, saying that the Syrian "massacre" is not only a shame to the Syrian regime but a shame to the international community as a whole, adding that the Assad regime is heading for "defeat".

"We, as Egypt and Turkey, do not need to look for a model for a system of government. Our civilisations and history have provided us with means to coexist."

Erdogan concluded his speech by addressing attendees in Arabic, saying a popular Egyptian chant 'Raise your head high, you're Egyptian" associated with the 25 January 2011 uprising.

This is Erdogan's second visit to post-Mubarak Egypt. His first visit was in September 2011.
