Hundreds of prosecutors are to start a partial strike until the new prosecutor-general, Talaat Abdullah, resigns

Hundreds of prosecutors have begun a sit-in at the prosecutor-general’s office, demanding his immediate resignation.

The action on Sunday followed an earlier decision by prosecutor-general Talaat Abdullah to remain in his position, after having previously offered his resignation.

The prosecutors organised a rally at Abdullah’s office in downtown Cairo on Sunday afternoon, demanding his resignation. They also announced a partial strike until the Supreme Council of the Judiciary accepts the resignation of Abdullah, which he presented to them on Monday.

General prosecutors have already issued a statement announcing that they will not cooperate with Abdullah.

Last Monday, not less a thousand prosecutors from all over the country protested in front of the prosecutor-general’s office demanding Talaat Abdullah's immediate resignation and threatening to start a nationwide strike. The prosecutors objected to the way in which President Morsi appointed the prosecutor-general, describing the appointment as an incursion by the presidency into judicial authority.

Following the protest, the prosecutor-general presented his resignation to the Supreme Council of the Judiciary in order to preserve the "dignity" of the position, but then on Thursday he withdrew his resignation claiming that he will not let "a few hundred" affect the position of the prosecutor-general.
