The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party has launched an anti-rodent campaign in Alexandria, Egypt's second largest city, within the context of ongoing preparations for upcoming parliamentary elections.

FJP members, led by the party's secretary for Alexandria Saber El-Merey, have begun sprinkling rat poison in areas throughout the coastal city, especially the working-class districts of Ameriya and Agami.

The move follows a spate of complaints by local residents of marked increases in the number of rodents and vermin in the area.

Nice gesture, terrible indications
I have to appreciate the personal effort of the persons who did the work. However, let us ignore for a moment the obvious errors in this effort (like seriously, poison out in our environment just like that?). Instead, my question is, whose job description is it to provide basic, and I mean BASIC, santitation services?! Shouldn't it the local government in collaboration with private companies? We pay for these services to be provided by people dedicated to this task, otherwise what are they doing with our money if they'll send me volunteers to do their job?

Wrong way...
To lay out poison open as shown on the photos is utmost dangerous for environment, children, dog, cats etc.pp There are other systems available which not endanger other creatures. And you should better educate people to avoid garbage or to collect it AND install a proper garbage collection system. Poison is the last thing to spread, there is enough of poison here in this country already. And: Rats are very intelligent animals, if they know once the places where other animals died, they will avoid them... This is scientifically proven.

Soklve the problem, rather than treat the symptoms
Alexandria does not need more dangerous materials on the streets. It will get distributed to people's shoes to be brought into homes, and blown by the wind into food and drink at outdoor cafes. Think of what rat poison can do to cats, dogs and children who may encounter it. A better plan would be to develop a consistent and effective plan for garbage removal and disposal.
