Spokesman of the Salafist Nour party Gamal El-Marra announces that the party will not partake in any activities in the upcoming second anniversary of the 25 January uprising.
"The country's circumstances cannot handle protests or celebrations. We face many challenges that require serious work in order to rebuild a state that has been sabotaged for decades," he explained.
Of the political parties that espouse hardline Islamist doctrines, the Nour Party is the most influential Salafist party in Egypt. It was established shortly after the 25 January 2011 uprising, which forced authoritiarian president Mubarak to step down.
The party led a coalition of Islamist political parties that won 127 seats in the now-dissolved lower house of parliament.
An internal leadership crisis hit a peak towards the end of 2012, when its former head Emad Abdel-Ghafour and his supporters established their own party: Al-Watan (Homeland) in January after staging mass resignations.
