A number of suspects in the sectarian clashes at Abbasiya Cathedral on Sunday 7 April have been arrested, according to an interior ministry security official source speaking to Al-Ahram Arabic-language news website on Wednesday.
Security forces, along with the ministry's prosecution and general security body, are intensifiying their efforts to arrest the rest of the suspects in the coming hours, the source added.
The source explained that most of the suspects live in Al-Sayeda Zeinab district, in central Cairo and the Shubra Al-Kheima district, in north Cairo and are both Muslims and Copts.
Violence broke out on Sunday outside Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Abbasiya, Cairo. A funeral had taken place for Copts killed on Saturday in sectarian clashes in Qalioubiya, north of Cairo.
Egypt's Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II, along with other bishops, will receive public figures in the papal premises wishing to offer condolences for those killed in recent protests on Thursday, according to the Youth Bishopric's Facebook page.
