The first session in the trial of former Minister of Interior Habib El Adly will be held tomorrow at Giza Criminal Court.

El Adly is accused of profiteering, money laundering and committing intentional harm. On 12 February, Egypt's prosecutor-general received an email from the Money Laundering Unit, saying a bank had reported that a partner in a contractors company had transferred LE4.5 million into El Adly ‘s account, which did not reflect his usual banking activity.

After investigation it appeared that the man who transferred the account had previously made an agreement with the Ministry to construct buildings on land owned by the Ministry. The person also bought land in New Cairo, which was allocated to the Minister and paid for by transferring money to El Adly’s private account.

El Adly is also being questioned over crimes committed during the revolution, including the injury and murder of hundreds of protesters. It is also alleged that the former minster gave order to open prisons and release detainees to terrorise people and asked the police to evacuate the streets, leaving citizens unprotected from acts of thuggery.

El Mohamedy Kunsuwa will be the judge presiding over the case. Kunsuwa was also the judge for the trial of the murder of Lebanese singer Suzanne Tamim, in which he delivered a death sentence to Egyptian business tycoon Hisham Talaat Mustafa.
