The head of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) submitted his resignation Thursday. Judge Hossam El-Gheriany was appointed as head of the NCHR with 27 other members in September 2012.
Earlier, El-Gheriany was the head of Egypt's Constituent Assembly, tasked with drafting the constitution, during the period under ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi.
The constitution was suspended Wednesday among other procedures taken by the military in response to 30 June mass protests, starting a new transitional period. High Constitutional Court head Judge Adly Mansour has assumed executive powers until presidential and parliamentary elections are held.
