Egypt has scrapped a joint naval exercise with Turkey in frustration with the latter’s "unacceptable" position on Egypt's affairs, the Egyptian foreign ministry said on Friday.

The Turkey-Egypt naval exercise under the name "Sea of Friendship" was scheduled for October in Turkey.

The move comes "in protest at the unacceptable statements and actions by Turkey, which constitute a blatant interference in Egypt's [domestic] affairs and stand against the will of the Egyptian people," read a statement by Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Both Turkey and Egypt recalled their respective ambassadors late on Thursday, further straining ties between the two states.

Turkey took the move first in condemnation of  Cairo's crackdown on supporters of Egypt's toppled president Mohamed Morsi. Egypt retaliated quickly by recalling its envoy.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday urged the UN Security Council to convene on what he termed a massacre in Egypt, and criticised Western nations for failing to condemn Morsi's ouster.
