The US mission in Cairo announced that it will be closed on Sunday for security reasons, amid intermittent clashes in the Egyptian capital.

“The possibility of protests in vicinity of the Embassy continues. Please do not travel to the Embassy unless you receive specific instructions from the Embassy to do so,” read a statement on the US embassy’s website.

The embassy had closed early on Wednesday following deadly violence in Cairo, and remained closed on Thursday.

“As a matter of general practice, US citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur.  Even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence.”

“US citizens in Egypt are urged to monitor local news reports and to plan their activities accordingly.”
