Senior Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed El-Beltagy was arrested Thursday in Giza governorate, Ahram Arabic website reported.

El-Beltagy was observed by the police for two days before his arrest in the rural area of Abo El-Namras in Giza.

He has been in hiding since the police's bloody crackdown on the pro-Morsi sit-in in Cairo's Rabaa Al-Adawiya on 14 August.

El-Beltagy's daughter, Asmaa, 17, died during the crackdown on 14 August.

On Wednesday, El-Beltagy appeared on Al-Jazeera channel in a pre-recorded video reiterating his condemnation of what he described as a military coup. In the video, he said that the Egyptian authorities have no evidence that the Brotherhood have engaged in any terrorist acts, and he urged detained members of the Brotherhood not to answer questions by investigators as authorities "lack legitimacy.”

El-Beltagy is known for stating that if ousted President Mohamed Morsi returns to office, militant attacks in Sinai Peninsula, ongoing since Morsi's ouster on 3 July, will stop, a statement that government officials point to as proof that the group is supporting terrorism.

The prosecution had previously charged El-Beltagy with a number of offences, including attempted murder and forming a "terrorist gang" at the pro-Morsi Rabaa Al-Adawiya protest camp.

El-Beltagy is scheduled to be investigated in connection both with violence in early August at the Republican Guards headquarters in which 51 pro-Morsi protesters were killed, and a separate incident in which police clashed with Rabaa Al-Adawiya protestors.

State news agency MENA also reported that ex-minister of manpower Khaled El-Azhary and Brotherhood senior figure Gamal El-Ashry were arrested with El-Beltagy.

El-Beltagy's daughter, Asmaa, 17, died during the crackdown on 14 August. In actuality, she was killed by a sniper. It was a very clear case. So even here, we have to accept either it is a natural death or suicide...?

The Nazi-like coupmakers
The coup makers will go down as usurpers and rapists of the people's will. The Nazism of the Military Junta will eventually find a lasting place in the dusbin of history.

His shoes are cleaner than the ruling junta
He must have been reponsible for 50 years of tyranny and corruption. He must have been responsible for the murder of thousands of Egyptians by the army and paid thugs. He must have been reponsible for the 1967 disaster. But the truth is that Beltaju shoes atre cleaner and purer than the fascist establishment which usurped the people's will and decapitated democracy.

Criminals running an illegitimate dictatorship now running riot with a civilised nation
It is obvious to the discerning observer that this arrest by an illegitimate military regime is politically motivated to silence the voice of the decent people of Egypt. However, this time round the military and its criminal elements of both the old regime and media will fail as the fear factor used by previous dictators has already been broken. The Egyptian people are now free of fear and will resist their oppressors until they take control of their destiny. History and the International Criminal Courts will be the judge of those imposing their power through the collusion of the corrupt military.

El-Beltagy is a hero
May he be protected and be granted patience to endure the terrible crime committed against him and his family with the assassination of his daughter. He is an Egyptian hero! And may all those who lie and twist his words be shown justice.

I salute this man who smiles even when we know he must cry for his daughter's murder
Publish this comment if you have any moral fiber left! I salute the bravery of this man who smiles even when we know he must be crying inside for his daughter Asmaa's murder. Shame on the government of Egypt for murdering his daughter in cold blood through their snipers. The whole world condemns you. Remember that God sees everything and there is a reckoning if not in this life, then in the next! May Allah bless you with Jannah oh Asmaa and all the martyrs of Rabaa! Some in your nation may desecrate your names by calling you 'terrorists', but your sacrifice will not be in vain. Yes, militant attacks will stop, not because Morsi was in cahoots with the Sinai militants, but because Morsi didn't spill their blood and he knew how to make peaceful dialogue even with Sinai extremists. Don't take El-Beltagi's comment out of context please.
