Two thirds of the vote in Egypt's second largest city, Alexandria, has been counted, a judicial source told Ahram Online, with the results hitherto showing the first win for the “No” vote, with 65 per cent of the ballots voting against the amendments, against 35 per cent in favour.
It is still to early to call, however, since the votes of the semi-rural Montazah district, accounting for one third of eligible voters in Alexandria, are yet to be counted, the source noted.
A “No” or close vote in Alexandria would carry substantial significance, both in real and symbolic terms, since the coastal city has for years been the major base of the country's Islamist movement, both the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists.
