The Muslim Brotherhood has called on states and international organisations not to recognise Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as a representative of Egypt, saying he is part of a "void" government.
"The Muslim Brotherhood calls upon all states and organisations not to recognise this [interim] government, not to allow [Fahmy] to represent Egypt... And not to allow him to enter the UN," the group said in a statement late on Wednesday on Fahmy, who is currently heading the Egyptian delegation at the UN’s 68th General Assembly.
Fahmy was appointed Egypt’s Foreign Minister in the interim government, formed in July following Morsi’s ouster by the army amid mass nationwide protests against his rule.
Since he arrived in New York last Tuesday, he has been meeting with his counterparts from the US, UK, China and other nations.
Fahmy has been keen to assert that the Egyptian state is committed to implementing the announced transitional roadmap and pursuing a full democratic process.
The Muslim Brotherhood had called earlier this week for demonstrations at the UN headquarters to protest Fahmy's role "as representative of the state." The Brotherhood calls came part of demonstrations it dubbed "The Coup does not represent Egypt," referring to Morsi’s ouster.
Since the Islamist president was overthrown, the Brotherhood has been staging anti-government demonstrations nationwide. However, turnout has decreased recently, with protesters more commonly taking to the streets within their own neighbourhoods.
