Egypt's State Commissioners Authority, a body that advises the government on legal issues, has recommended reviewing the dual-nationality of the sons of Egypt's deposed president Mohamed Morsi.

The office advised the reversal of an unauthorised decision by the Interior Ministry last May – during Morsi's tenure – to grant the president's sons, aged 31 and 32, American and Egyptian nationalities.

In a report to Egypt's administrative court on Monday, the office said Morsi's sons had obtained American nationality at birth in the US without necessary permission from authorities. It counseled that the cabinet should consider whether to refuse them Egyptian nationality.

The report, drawn up by Judge Farhat Abdel-Azim, claimed that minors should only retain a foreign nationality acquired at birth until they are of age. Those of dual-nationality are then required to submit a request to the Interior Ministry to determine whether or not they should retain their Egyptian nationality.

The cabinet has exclusive jurisdiction on the matter, the report says.

Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president was ousted by the army in July following widespread protests against his turbulent year in power.

He has been jailed at an undisclosed location and is due to stand trial on 4 November on charges of inciting violence.
