Egypt's general prosecutor referred Al-Ahram newspaper Editor-in-Chief Abdel-Nasser Salama to a criminal court for accusations of assaulting and libeling an Al-Ahram Journalist.

The journalist, Sahar Abdel-Rahman, accused Salama of slapping her and insulting her in public.

Salama's position as chief editor has been challenged by Al-Ahram's general assembly, which tried to remove him from the post after the fall of former president Mohamed Morsi. The assembly said Salama should be removed due to his appointment by the Brotherhood-dominated upper house of parliament, the Shura Council. It was dissolved following Morsi's ouster.

Salama has remained the chief editor of Al-Ahram. The position can only be changed via a decision by the Supreme Council for Journalism, a state body.
