March in central Cairo was not authorised by police

The Way of the Revolution Front staged a protest march in Cairo on Sunday, calling for the "downfall of military rule.”

The newly founded group, which opposes both the interim government and the Muslim Brotherhood, was joined by student demonstrators during the march.

Hundreds of protesters marched through downtown Cairo, starting from Talaat Harb Square, a few hundred metres from Tahrir. The march left the area as there were indications that local street vendors would assault them, according to Osama Ahmed, coordinator of the Way of the Revolution Front at Cairo University.

The march was not authorised by the police, as required by a newly enacted protest law.

Protesters also expressed dismay over what they described as police brutality, and called for the release of students who have been arrested in recent weeks at university demonstrations.

The front includes members of the April 6 Youth Movement, the Strong Egypt Party, the Revolutionary Socialists and the Justice and Freedom Youth.
