Egypt’s interim-deputy prime minister and international cooperation minister Ziad Bahaa El-Din has announced his resignation.

In a statement written on Thursday and published on his official Facebook page on Monday, Bahaa El-Din explained that after the ratification of the new constitution he believed that his role in the transitional road map was complete and that he could return to "political, partisan and legal work."

"The ratification of the constitution by an overwhelming majority establishes new legitimacy and by achieving progress in the cabinet’s programs for economic developments and social justice announced in September 2013, the main phase in the road map has been finalized," he said.

"We start a new phase in which the country is preparing for upcoming elections and to complete the road map, I hope you accept my resignation," Bahaa El-Din wrote.

He added that the transitional phase "should have preserved unity and overcome differences so that country would have survived the constitutional and economic collapse caused by the former regimes."

Prime Minister Hazem El-Beblawi has yet to look into Bahaa El-Din's resignation, Cabinet Spokesman Hany Salah El-Din told MENA.

Bahaa El-Din had sometimes expressed criticism of decisions by the interim government including a controversial protest law.

He was appointed deputy-prime minister and minister of cooperation in July 2013 as part of the interim government formed after the ouster of Morsi on 3 July.
