Masked men on a motorcycle shoot dead police officer on Ibrahim Salama Street in Ismailiya

A police officer was killed in a drive-by shooting in the Egyptian Suez Canal city of Ismailiya on Tuesday.

Two masked men on a motorcycle opened fire at the officer on Ibrahim Salama Street.

Police are investigating whether the assailants stole the officer's gun and shot him with it or used their own weapon.

Investigators are at the scene and are interviewing eyewitnesses.

There has been a wave of attacks on army and police personnel since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi on 3 July 2013.

In late January, an aide to the interior minister was shot dead in a drive-by shooting when he was leaving his home in Giza.

Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim escaped an assassination attempt in September.

Ismailiya is on the western bank of the Suez Canal.
