The family, who had lived in Egypt for many years, were stabbed to death at home

Four members of a Syrian family who had reportedly been living in Egypt for many years were found stabbed to death at their home in Alexandria on Monday, local security officials have said.

The four people, who include a six-year-old boy, were found at their residence in the northern part of the coastal city. A security source told Ahram Online that investigations were underway but no motive had yet been discovered for the crime.

The slain family, who were reportedly Christian, included a middle-aged man, two women, and the boy.

Part of the flat was set on fire and engulfed by the flames, and video footage on a local news website apparently of the scene showed two bodies, one lying on a bed under a sheet, and another on the floor of a living room.

The number of Syrians in Egypt have swelled in recent years, with many new arrivals fleeing conflict in Syria and claiming refugee status.

According to local press reports, the slain family were long-term residents of Egypt who had lived in Alexandria for many years.
