Student protesters clashed with police at Alexandria University on Thursday, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported. The clashes reportedly started on campus when pro-Muslim Brotherhood students pelted security forces with stones and tried to exit the campus. Police responded by firing teargas, chasing protesters into side streets.
Video footage of the scene uploaded onto Ahram Arabic news website showed students fleeing from the gas and the sound of gunfire.
Alexandria’s security chief, Major-General Nasser El-Abd, told Al-Ahram that police arrested five students on Thursday. A security source said Molotov cocktails had been confiscated from the students.
The health ministry said on Wednesday that clashes between security forces and Islamists on that day left two dead and 30 injured across five governorates.
Supporters of Mohamed Morsi have been protested since his ouster in July 2013. A major security crackdown has seen thousands arrested.
Also on Thursday, students at Cairo University Engineering Faculty began a strike in protest against the previous day's violence, condemning the presence of security forces on campus and calling for detained students to be released.
