A car bomb has killed a policeman and injured another in Sixth October City, an interior ministry aide told CBC Extra private satellite channel on Wednesday morning.
Unidentified assailants placed a homemade device near the rear tire on the right hand side of the police vehicle.
The explosion killed a Central Security Forces officer, Brigadier-General Ahmed Zaki, who was sitting in the back seat, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
One of the two officers sitting in the front was injured.
The back part of the vehicle was completely destroyed.
Explosives experts are searching the area for further devices.
Attacks, mainly against security personnel and installations, have grown common since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi last summer.
Sixth October City is on the outskirts of Cairo.
