Following a three month strike, journalists at Akhbra Al-Adab (Literature News) won their battle to replace the weekly periodical's editor. Abla El-Roweyni replaces Mostafa Abdalla as the managing editor of the magazine ending employee unrest and gaining back the support of journalists and readers.

Abdalla's appointment in January after many years of leadership by famous Egyptian writer Gamal El-Ghitany caused strong objections by journalists. According to staff, Abdalla's policies aimed at increasing profits at the expense of the quality of the content. However, it took three long months of negotiations, discussions and a continued strike as well as a call by readers for a boycott in order for journalists to succeed in their demand.

El-Roweyni was the cultural journalist for the daily newspaper Al-Akhbar and was responsible for the weekly page on youth writings in particular. Her famous book "Al Ganuby" (The Southerner) about her relationship with her late husband Amal Donqol, was published in 1992 by Dar Souad El-Sabah.
