Mahmoud El-Wardani, winner of the 2010 Sawiris Cultural Award for short stories, released his latest book, Stories of Freedom. The book is a collection of articles and papers, previously published or printed elsewhere, dealing with the important topic of freedom. The papers include arguments related to women’s freedom, freedom of expression and the religious vs. civil state arguments. The book also includes tribute articles to Ahmed Abdalla, the late revolutionary from the Student Movement in the 1970s, and to Nasr Hamed Abu-Zeid who suffered exile after battling for freedoms.
El-Wardani belongs to the 1970s generation. He published his first collection in the literature supplement of the Masaii newspaper. His best-known work is Walking in the Park at Night written in 1968 but not published until 1984. His other works include Taste of Burning, Music of the Mall and Heads Ripe for Plucking, which were translated into English by AUC press in 2008.
