Nesf Ontha (Half a Female), by Aya SaadEddin, Cairo: Oktob Publishing house, 2011.pp 88
The young writer and storyteller Aya SaadEddin will celebrate the publication of her new book, Half a Female, tomorrow, on 22 Thursday December, in a seminar at Arabisk Bookshop. Writer Mohammed Fathi will lead the discussion, along with writer Yehia Hashim. Half a Female is a short story collection containing 14 stories with titles like “The betrayal cup”, “I love you...but”, “Killer”, “Cup of Coffee”, “Revenge” and “I give up on love”.
The collection’s main theme revolves around the daily life of a woman, shedding light on her failures and ordinary joys. The writer sought to show the way a woman could be both the subject of repression or a oppressor in her collection. The stories are full of nuance and detail, showing the substance of the woman’s life and its contradictions; she shifts between love scenes, revenge and sacrifice.
Aya SaadEddin has published a previous novel, an espionage mystery. She is a researcher in Al Moqtataf Al-Masry (The Egyptian Selection) magazine. Her new book “Are you into Horror” (Leek Fil Ro’b) will be published during the upcoming Cairo International Book Fair, to be held in January 2012.
